How To Achieve That Big Goal

April 10, 2017

Interview with Sam Bennett, author of the book Get It Done

Mike Carruthers: Funny thing about people and the goals they set.

Sam Bennett: Almost everybody has at least 1 project that they know that if they were to spend time on it, it would make a big difference in their lives. You know it’s something very close to their heart, something really important to them and somehow every single day we manage to get everything done for everybody else and not move forward – and it hurts.

Sam Bennett, author of the book Get It Done, says to some degree this is human nature.

I mean we’re tribal animals we’re very attuned to the needs of the group. So we really are inclined to do things for other people before we do things for ourselves. But also I think we’re afraid I think we get taught that things should be perfect and perfect inside of our mind maybe even before we even begin. So we start to do a lot of getting ready to get ready and we make a lot of excuses and it’s funny because it causes so much hurt on the inside and on the outside. But moving forward even a little tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny bit feels so good.

If you have that special project that you never quite seem to get to…

My favorite tip is 15 minutes a day every single day, before you check your email, before you check your email, before you check your email spend 15 minutes a day on those projects that matter the most to you. But you make that everyday commitment to yourself and it is shocking how much you can get done in 15 minutes. And how much you can get done in 15 minutes for a week, a month, 2 months – it’s amazing.
