Interview with Larry Ackerman, author of the book The Identity Code
Mike Carruthers: You’ve heard this all of your life. You can be anything you want if you aim high and work hard.
Larry Ackerman: But that’s a lie. You can’t be anything you want to be in this world. At the same time you have far more potential than you know.
Larry Ackerman, author of the book The Identity Code…
And that potential is held in your identity and once you crack the code you begin to see where you really can go and what does make sense for you. And you let go of many of the things that perhaps you’ve told yourself that you have to do…you have to be a successful lawyer or banker, no you don’t.
So, how do you determine that? Well Larry sets forth a set of questions to ask yourself, like; “Who am I?” What makes me special” and “is there a pattern to my life?”
It’s the pattern that comes when you understand the achievements of your life. They could be tiny little things, they could be big things. I remember when I was in second grade I was creating little bears out of clay and for some reason that has always stuck with me as a very proud moment in my life. Well, there are many such moments in one’s life and when you aggregate them and look at them there’s always a theme no matter how random they may seem to be over the course of ten, twenty or even forty years. Understanding that theme is what reveals the pattern.
So, it may be worth taking a moment to figure out what your identity is, as Larry defines it…
Identity is very simply defined, as the unique characteristics that help us understand our potential for creating value in this world.
