Interview with Dr. David Katz, author of the book Disease Proof
Mike Carruthers: To eat healthy and not get fat you have to choose the right foods and that’s not always easy.
Dr. David Katz: There’s actually more added sugar in some pasta sauces than there is in ice cream topping. And I mean that very literally, people don’t know that.
Dr. David Katz, author of the book Disease Proof, says we all know that to lose weight we need to decrease the number of calories we eat.
The problem with decreasing calories in is it leaves people hungry. Well there’s a skill power approach to that issue and that is if you trade up the quality of your food. So you buy better bread, if you buy better pasta sauce which doesn’t have added sugar, if you buy better cereal which is higher in whole grains and fiber and lower in added sugar and if you make these kinds of changes one of the many virtues of more nutritious food is it fills us up.
In fact often the low calorie choice is not the best.
100 calories snacks are only 100 calories but if it’s junky food you’ll be hungry again in 10 minutes. And they’re 100 calories snacks but if you eat 17 of them how does that help you? A food like walnuts if actually a high calorie food but we have research to show that walnuts and other highly nutritious nuts like almonds (even though they’re energy dense) they fill you up and keep you full. If you choose foods that do that – actually even if the foods are relatively high in calories it helps control your appetite, improve the quality of your diet and reduce the total number of calories it takes over the day to feel full.
