Interview with Charles Kiefer, co-author of the book The Art Of Insight
Mike Carruthers: It’s often described as an “aha” moment an insight into something new, what is it exactly?
Charles Kiefer: Charles Kiefer, co-author of the book The Art of Insight, says those magical “aha” moments are more likely to happen when you’re in a particular frame of mind.

And it’s an easy going, relaxed, contemplative in some cases state of mind but it’s not the state of mind that we are in most of the time during the day – thrashing around with emails, phone calls, high pressures, barreling through on problems. And so the way to have more insights is to find that state of mind, that natural state of mind in which you’re apt to have them – and then they will reoccur with greater frequency.
Interestingly for many people it happens in the shower but wherever and whenever it happens to you…
Just be mindful of that and you’re going to get more of them, Mike, you’re going to get more – as long as you don’t work hard at it.
Because when you work hard at trying to have an insight you get outside that state of mind. And everyone has the ability to find new insight.
When you look for something fresh your unconscious mind knows how to think up things you never thought before. You do it all the time, right Mike? I mean you’ve got thoughts that you’ve never had before, they pop into your head so it’s a natural process everybody in the planet has it. It’s just that we tend to occupy ourselves not in that mode of thinking.
