Mike Carruthers: Want to save money when you buy your next computer? Consider buying one that’s been refurbished.
David Pogue: Refurbished makes us think that it’s been repaired or something or somebody’s drooled on it or got cat hair in it. No these are brand new laptops or whatever that somebody bought and then returned.

They can’t still call it new but it is new and in fact it’s been inspected again. Same warranty just 15% less – I buy all my computers this way.
Another great way to save money or get money is with a gift card exchange.
So when somebody gives you a giftcard for a store you don’t use you can turn it into these companies for cash. Not full value, like 75% value but you get cash. And the flip side of that we the people can then go to those same websites and buy those cards that have been turned in also for deep discounts from the face price. These websites are called things like; hardcash.com and raise.com.
And for your digital audio and video components David says don’t waste money on the super expensive gold tipped cables.
A digital signal doesn’t degrade, it doesn’t have static it’s either on or off. The cable either works or it doesn’t. You don’t get higher quality from having gold tips on that thing.
