Interview with Roger Wright, author of the book Finding Work When There Are No Jobs
Mike Carruthers: When finding a job is difficult it may help to look at the people who actually do get jobs.
Roger Wright: Ask 10 people how they got their jobs and see if 1 of them got it through a good resume or a good interview. There’s always some other personal factor.
Roger Wright, author of the book Finding Work When There Are No Jobs…
If better resumes and interviews got jobs everyone could get a job. There’s an assumption that one size fits all that’s the underlying problem.
People get jobs today through personal connections more than any other way. So Rogers’s advice…
Take your story out into the world and you start talking to people who you already know. People within communities, I’ve replaced the word networking with the word “comunitize” because networking is come to mean something that is kind of tired and old. What “communitize” means is talking to folks you already know.
When looking for work a lot of people tend to focus on their resume and their skills and training.
The missing piece to connecting people and work isn’t so much skills, training – although none of that stuff is bad it’s all good and it’s all needed – it’s that we need more. We need this how do you establish the connection between people and work? And you do it by making it personal, making it your own. Don’t worry about better resumes worry about thinking about this differently.
